Members of the Castleisland based Garda Traffic Corps are still investigating the circumstances surrounding a road traffic accident in which five local youths were injured.
The accident happened at about 10pm on Sunday night on a narrow stretch of a local by-road at Portduff just outside Castleisland.
Weather conditions were poor at the time of the accident with a heavy mist and light winds prevailing.
Emergency services were called to the scene and the occupants of the car were taken to hospital with varying degrees of injuries and some more serious than others.
The accident happened as the road narrows on the approach to the bridge at Portduff and the impact demolished a solid concrete four foot by two foot by six foot high pillar and the attached wall.
The occupants are recovering in hospital as the investigations continue. Locals and relatives are amazed and relieved that they survived such a violent impact.
Some are suggesting that they had a miraculous escape and that the outcome could easily have been one of the worst local accidents in living memory.
The devastation at the crash site would suggest that several local families and the community here only just avoided an outcome which doesn’t bear contemplating.
In the meantime, prayers and Facebook messages of love and support are being showered on the injured as they come to terms with the aftermath of their ordeal and try to get their young lives back on track. And we all wish them well in that regard.
