The Late John Ahern, Gortatlea and Castleisland

The late John Ahern.
The late John Ahern.

The death has been announced of John Ahern of Gortatlea. For several generations the late John (79) was as synonymous with Limerick Road as Hartnett’s Corner or Nelligan’s Bakery or the Copper Beach and Japanese Maple trees at the entrance to Desmonds’ Avenue.
His dedication to his family’s business,  Ahern’s Opel Garage would be hard to surpass by anyone anywhere. He was there at the crack of dawn every morning – an hour or so before everyone else and he stayed there after them all each evening.
Limerick Road was never the same again when the garage packed up and left for its sparkling new base on the Tralee Road two days before the Christmas of 2005.
I thought of John Ahern today as I passed along the part of the road he crossed so many times between the two parts of the garage in the course of his long working career. I blessed myself and hoped that God will be good to him – for John was a gentleman.
