Journalist and author Breda Joy has released her latest book, The Wit & Wisdom of Kerry. Published by Mercier Press it is a humorous and touching collection all about the Kingdom of Kerry, the unique take of Kerrymen on life and the way visitors and ‘blow-ins’ have viewed the incomparable Kerry character and landscape through the ages.
“Wordsmiths such as Con Houlihan, John B. Keane and John M. Synge are quoted, alongside other, less well-known scribes.”
With sections covering politics, sport, the demon drink, marriage, humour and emigration among others, The Wit & Wisdom of Kerry journeys from the sublime to the ridiculous, stopping off at assorted stations in between.
There are contributions from well-known Kerry writers – the ‘usual suspects’ – as well as from memoirs, journals and anthologies below the general radar.
Wordsmiths such as Con Houlihan, John B. Keane and John M. Synge are quoted, alongside other, less well-known scribes, who all add colour to this portrait of The Kingdom.
The official launch is on Sunday in Killarney by Joanna O’Flynn (nee Keane) of Listowel Writers’ Week.
Within these pages you will find a connection between Kilgarvan and Martin Luther King, Dingle and Dolly Parton, Killarney and Brendan Behan. Even George Clooney gets a look in.
