St. Mary’s Basketball Club held its annual awards ceremony at the River Island Hotel on Wednesday night.
The event was co-hosted by club PRO Liz Galwey and Paudie Fleming with close to 200 in attendance.
It was a hugely successful year for the Castleisland club with both league and cup wins in U-12, U-14, U-16, U-17 and U-18 in the girls’ division one as well as league and cup wins for the division one ladies.
European Title
The U-12 boys’ division one team also won county league honours while the U-14 boys division one team won its category cup and the U-16 girls brought a European title to the club.
Division 1 player, Philomena O’Connor was Kerry Area Basketball Board Player of the Year.
The following club players represented the club on Kerry teams: U-14 girls: Grainne Walsh and Paris McCarthy captained the Kerry team which won the Southern Regional Tournament.
Aoife Kerins, Rachel O’Sullivan and Katie O’Connor were also on this team.
All club players and coaches were acknowledged for their dedication to the club during the season.
On Kerry Teams
On the Kerry U-14 boys’ team, St. Mary’s was represented by Keelan O’Donoghue and Shane Óg McGaley.
On the U-17 girls’ team were: Nicole Downey, Bríd Moriarty and Maebh Young. St. Mary’s Danny Hickey was a member of the U-17 Kerry team.
Club Coaches Tommy Dom and Paudie Fleming
Club coaches, Tommy Dom O’Connor and Paudie Fleming coached Kerry teams this season and Paudie Fleming is assistant coach to the Irish U-16 boys’ Irish team which travels to Bulgaria this summer.
Most Improved Young Players
The following received Most Improved Young Player and Most Valuable awards:
2016: U-13 All Ireland winning Community games girls team.
Most Valuable Player: Paris McCarthy.
U-10 Boys: Most Improved Young Player is Jamie Kerins; Most Valuable Player: Cillian Dennehy.
U-10 Girls: Most Improved Young Player is Keeva Ahern; Most Valuable Player is Molly O’Mahony.
U-12 Boys Division 1: Most Improved Young Player is Mint O’Connor and the Most Valuable Player is Thomas Conway.
U-12 Girls Division 1: Most Improved Young Player is Muireann Rahilly and the Most Valuable Player is Hannah Herilhy.
U-12 Girls Division 2: Most Improved Young Player is Ellie Mai Walsh and the Most Valuable Palyer is Maura Collins.
U-12 Girls Division 3: Most Improved Young Player is Emily O’Donoughue and the Most Valuable Player is Kayleigh Barrett.
U-14 Boys Division 1: Most Improved Young Player is Cian Walsh-Murphy and the Most Valuable Player is Keelan O’Donoghue.
U-14 Girls Division 1: Most Improved Young Player is Aoife Kerins and the Most Valuable Player is Grainne Walsh.
U-14 Girls Division 2: Most Improved Youngh Player is Aoibhín O’Mahony and the Most Valuable Player is Alex Sheehan.
U-16 Boys Division 3: Most Improved Young Player is Aaron O’Connor and the Most Valuable Player is Ciaran Brosnan.
U-16 Boys Division 1: Most Improved Young Player is Charlie Conway and the Most Valuable Player is Garry O’Sullivan.
U-16 Girls Division 1: Most Improved Young Player: Áine Sheehan and the Most Valuable Player is Kayla O’Connor.
U-16 Girls B: Most Improved Young Player is Avia Herbert and the Most Valuable Player is Ellen Collins.
U-17 Girls Division 1: Most Improved Young Player is Bríd Moriarty and and the Most Valuable Player is Maebh Young.
Most Valuable Player awards were presented to the following: U-18 Girls Division 1: Labhoise Walmsley and U-18 Boys Division 1: Jack Curran.
The following senior players received Most Valuable Player awards: Division 2 Ladies: Tracey O’Sullivan; Division 2 Men A: Keith McCarthy; Division 2 Men B: Chris Brosnan and Division 1 Ladies: Philomena O’Connor.
