Team Tom McCarthy’s Win Last Home Game in Style

Team Tom McCarthy’s cruised to a comprehensive twenty five point win with a scoreline of 77 to 52, over Swords Thunder in their final home game of the season.

This Garvey’s SuperValu sponsored game was played at a fast pace from the buzzer with both sides going all out for the win.

The first quarter was close with the sides matching each other basket for basket. Lorraine Scanlon and Labhaoise Walmsley were prominent for the home side while Niamh O’Donovan and Anna Brennan were pushing hard for the visitors.

Home Side Lead

With fifteen seconds left in the first quarter St Mary’s were leading by a single point but Anna Brennan hit a big three and gave her side a two point advantage, 21 to 19 at the short break.

Thunder started the second quarter well and increased their lead to four points after two minutes but baskets from Lorriane Scanlon, Mia Hopkins and a big three from Denise Dunlea, her second of the night, gave the home side a lead they would never surrender.

Strong Rebounding

With four minutes left in the half Team Tom McCarthy’s led by eight, 35 to 27, and with Mary Herlihy to the fore they stretched their lead to twelve at half time whistle. Through good defence and strong rebounding they limited Swords to eight points in this quarter.

Third Quarter Closer

The third quarter was closer with Anna Brennan, Peggy Black and Niamh O’Donovan keeping the scoreboard ticking over for the visitors while Mia Hopkins, Labhoise Walmsley, Lorraine Scanlon and Denise Dunlea continued to impress for the home site – the latter scoring her third three pointer of the night. St Marys increased their lead to fifteen points at the end of this quarter 61 to 46.

Result Never in Doubt

The final quarter saw the home side out score their opponents by ten points and the result was never in doubt. Deirdre Geaney scored seven points in this quarter for the home side and they ran out comfortable winners 77 to 52.
