Students on Secondary School and Transportation Waiting Lists – Daly

Pa Daly, TD is now hearing about children of constituents who cannot secure a place in their nearest secondary school and are also queuing for a seat on the local school-bus.

Pa Daly, Sinn Féin TD for Kerry, is calling for a different approach to concessionary school transportation places where the nearest school is over-subscribed.

He said he is now hearing from constituents in mid-Kerry whose children could not secure a place in their nearest secondary school.

“These students have now registered for a different school and must resort to applying for a concessionary school transport in order to travel to their new school.

One Waiting List to Another

“As concessionary school transport places are not determined until August, these students are now on a waiting list for their bus ticket after already being on a waiting list for their nearest school since November 2020.

“Families should not have to wait or pay for concessionary school transport because the nearest school is over-subscribed. Waiting lists are already stressful for families and they should not have to worry about additional travel expenses.

Transition Made Difficult

“Transition from primary to secondary school is challenging for students and this situation makes it even more difficult.

“Education is a fundamental right and transportation should be free where the nearest school is over-subscribed.

“I have called on Minister Ryan to review the criteria for concessionary school transportation,” he concluded.
