In the course of 2021, Aidan Joy, the woodwork teacher and health and safety officer at Castleisland Community College teamed up with Principal Teresa Lonergan and they were successful in their application to the Department of Education and Skills for funding to replace the dust extraction system in the woodwork room.

Specialist engineers were contracted by the school and Kerry ETB to carry out an in-depth analysis of dust capture and procedures within the room.

The upgrades received provide a healthier environment for students.

Full List of Upgrades

The full list of upgrades includes: State of the art primary dust collection and associated electrical works.

Centralised wood chip collector for panel saw / bandsaw / planer / thicknesser. Non-centralised fine dust collectors with hepa filters and associated swing arms are for fine dust collection from wood turning lathes / vertical disc sanders / bin sanders and router table.

Dust collection machinery with hepa filters and boom arm to connect to an array of portable power tools such as: routers, jigsaws, belt and orbital sanders have also been installed.

Vacuuming V Brushing

These machines also assist in vacuuming as opposed to brushing the classroom at the end of the school day – ensuring an exceptionally clean work environment.

State of the art secondary dust collection and associated electrical works are being suspended from the ceiling and jet air filtration systems which catch any dust that may become airborne.

Team Credits

“These upgrades are only found in new school buildings and it is a credit to Aidan Joy, Teresa Lonergan, Pádraig O’Sullivan of Kerry ETB Building Officer and Mary O’Mahony of Egan Safety Solutions for achieving this state of the art installations for the college woodwork / construction studies classroom,” said a spokesperson for the college.
