Minister for the Environment Eamon Ryan said this week that the approaching winter is set to be a dramatic and difficult period for energy users because of the current spate of price hikes.
But he added that the government will do everything it can to avoid electricity blackouts.
Minister Ryan was commenting on an energy provider’s statement that there was a heightened risk of shortages in energy supplies this winter due to events in Europe and the war in Ukraine.
Deputy Danny Healy Rae’s Response
In response to Minister Ryan’s statement, Deputy Danny Healy Rae said that he’s asking for the government to open the Bord na Móna plants in the midlands again.
“From the day the government closed Bord na Móna power generating stations at Lanesboro and Shannon Bridge, without any alternatives, the cost of electricity has gone up every single day since. Now there is even talks of a shortage and I’m asking that these plants are reopened until we get over this present emergency,” said Deputy Danny.
