Scartaglen U-16 Ladies football squad and coaches brought a tough season of training and games to a highly successful conclusion at Castleisland Desmonds headquarters on Tuesday evening of last week.

Team captain Mollie Mahony said that the team trained hard throughout the season under the watchful eyes of their fantastic coaches Eamon John and Elaine O’Donoghue and Rory McShane.

Though we weren’t successful in the league we still fought on and hoped we would gain the East Kerry Championship title,” said Mollie as she gave a run down on their season of competition.

A Cracking, Drawn Game

Our first game of the East Kerry competition was against Inbhear Scéine Gaels Kenmare (ISG)  played in Castleisland. It was a cracking game that ended in a draw.

Then our second game was against Firies which we played in Farranfore and we won comprehensively.

This meant that ourselves, Scartaglen were to meet ISG Kenmare once again in the final.

I was honoured to be chosen as captain of this fantastic bunch of girls and although we have a young team it didn’t stop us Scart ladies as we were determined.

The final took place in Castleisland on a beautiful autumn evening. Both teams were evenly matched, it was a tough and exciting game.

Half Time Exhaustion

ISG Kenmare really put it up to us. At half time we were exhausted but with the encouragement of our coaches and the score at the break it gave us the determination to keep on going,” said Mollie.

We were all glad to hear the final whistle and especially when Scartaglen U-16 ladies emerged victorious on a score line 3-13 to 1-7. Scartaglen Abú!

On behalf of myself, as captain of the U-16 girls, I’d like to thank Eamonn John and Elaine and Rory for coaching us this season. And also a huge thank you to Scartaglen Ladies GAA Cub and all of our supporters throughout the year,” said a delighted Mollie on her own behalf and on that of her equally happy team-mates.

They’ll remember their tough season with pride and satisfaction in the years to come.
