Bike Shop in Castleisland

The late Dermot O’Sullivan will be remembered in Castleisland as a successful and obliging business owner.

For over a decade, through the ’90s he operated a bicycle sales and repair shop in the premises that once housed McElligott’s Bakery at No.52 Main Street.

The shop-front, facilitated by the extra width of the footpath, would be dwarfed by new bicycles and others in various states and in need of repair. His daily, morning and evening routine involved wheeling out his stock in the morning and back inside each evening.

He operated here at a time when children of almost all ages cycled to their schools and he was often called upon for emergency repairs. He carried these out with his characteristic cheeriness and with a parting nuggets of cycling advice to the grateful young school-goers.

May God be good to him.
