Local man John Brosnan from Portduff here in Castleisland is spreading the news of a fundraising drive that he and a group of friends of Wexford native Listry resident Paul Murphy are involved in.
They have Castleisland in mind for a visit over the October bank holiday weekend on Sunday 29th during the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival and again on the November 1st horse fair day.
Rare Condition Diagnosis
John explained that Paul Murphy is an old college friend of his now living in Listry with his wife Linda and two children Harry (14) and Sadie (9).
“Paul has been diagnosed with the rare condition, mitochondrial disease, and he has been in hospital for a number of extended stays and has undergone a number of procedures over the past 18 months or so” said John.
“Now in a wheelchair, he has been unable to work and he and his family have had a lot of adjusting to do, including adapting their house for wheelchair access and in providing for Paul’s increased needs.
A Real Gentleman
“It’s very hard for all of us who know Paul to see him and his family go through this, he is a real gentleman, full of good humour and always a good word for everyone.
“In recent years he had helped many into work as a local employment co-ordinator and it makes it all the more unfortunate to see him now in need of assistance,” John continued with his explanation of the need for the fundraising effort.
A Vintage Land Rover
“Tom Leslie and his team at Killarney Classic and Vintage Club have kindly nominated Paul as one of their annual draw beneficiaries.
“This year’s top prize is a vintage Land Rover and other prizes include vintage motorbikes, a weekend away for a six nations match including tickets, a voucher for tyres and turf is even listed as a prize.
“We took to the streets of Kenmare for their annual fair day selling tickets back in August and we will be in Castleisland on October 29th. during the Patrick O’Keefe Traditional Music Festival and again on November 1st for the annual fair day with the Land Rover and ticket books in tow,” he concluded.
