Oh Folk – It’s Back with Songs in a Stripped Back Form

George Murphy and Tanya McCole are on their way to sessions in Browne’s Bar in Castleisland on February 3rd and 17th respectively. See booking details below.

The Oh Folk! series of gigs are an opportunity to celebrate the musician in an intimate setting with great sound, to listen to the stories behind the songs and to hear them being performed in a stripped back form.

“These gigs provide us with a reason to carve time out of busy schedules, sit back, sip and savour some fantastic talent in the lovely local venue that is Browne’s Bar, Castleisland,” said founder Kate McSweeney as she flagged two upcoming sessions for the first month of spring.

Welcome Back George !

“In the upcoming Oh Folk! gigs, we’re thrilled to welcome back George Murphy to Castleisland. He has had notable appearances on the Late Late Show and sold-out performances at Vicar St. since his last visit.

“George will play on Saturday February 3rd. Following this, on February 17th, the exceptionally talented Donegal singer/songwriter Tanya McCole will take to the stage,” said Kate.

“George Murphy gained prominence through RTE Television’s You’re a Star programme. His debut album, ‘Dreamed A Dream,’ topped Irish charts and achieved triple platinum status.

So The Story Goes

“Recognized for his vocals, he shifted to indie rock with the second album, So The Story Goes, facing mixed reviews.

In 2009, he parted with Sony Ireland, toured America, and released The Ballad of Archie Thompson, while returning to his folk roots.

“In 2016, he released the live album Shadowman – The Stable Sessions.

“Joining The High Kings in 2017, George paused his solo career for the opportunity to travel and perform globally. In 2019, he led a successful solo tour and formed The Rising Sons. George and The Rising Sons have had sell out tours over the last year, playing to crowds in famous venues such as Vicar St.

Tanya McCole On Her Way

Tanya McCole, hailing from Ardara, Co. Donegal, moved to London in 1994 and later settled in Galway.

“She was part of bands like Horny Devils, Black Magic Big Band, and Lewd Tunes.

Returning to Donegal in 2005, Tanya collaborated with notable Irish artists like Sharon Shannon and Mundy.

“In 2009, her well-received debut album, Love, Hate & The Blues marked a significant milestone. In 2018, she released Because Of You showcasing a stripped-back style that highlights her distinctive voice. Tanya toured with Grammy winner John Prine in 2018 and 2020,” said Kate.

‘Authentic in Every Way’ – John Prine

“The world should know about Tanya McCole. I love her voice. She is authentic in every way – and a great road buddy too. Go Tanya, Go! – John Prine, in January 2019.

Sharon Shannon’s Take on Tanya

“Tanya is a force to be reckoned with. She is an absolutely phenomenal singer with some seriously powerful gusto and passion, but she can also move the listener to tears with her tender and emotional renditions of her slower songs, ” – Sharon Shannon.
