Kerry County Council has confirmed at this month’s meeting that Columbarium Walls will be considered for Listowel, Castleisland, Dingle, Killorglin and Kenmare in the next Burial Ground Capital Programme.

The local authority confirmed that they propose to provide Ash Plots in other Burial Grounds in the county.

This was in reply to a notice of motion by Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill, who feels that with the increase in people opting for cremation on the death of their loved ones, Columbarium Walls and Ash Plots should be made more widely available.

Cremation as an Option

“There is a requirement for Columbarium Walls and indeed Ash Plots, for the remains of our deceased loved ones all over Kerry, to cater for the ever increasing numbers of those opting for cremation.

“With proper planning now, we can also alleviate some of the pressure caused by less space available in our burial grounds,” said Councillor Cahill.

“It makes sense that we adapt to these changes in society, in a positive and timely fashion. More and more families will be switching to cremations as we move forward.

“We must put a budget in place so that we can accommodate all families in our county,” he said.

The Meeting Heard….

Replying to Cllr. Cahill’s questions, the meeting heard that Columbarium Walls at Tralee and Killarney will be considered for the next burial ground capital programme and in the next five largest populated towns in the county, that is, Listowel, Castleisland, Dingle, Kenmare, and Killorglin where adequate space is available and where there are no archaeological restrictions.

Half Sized Plots

Ash plots will be 50% the size of existing burial plots. These Ash plots will have similar requirements and conditions to standard burial plots. The purchaser will have to provide their own headstone and surround and they will also be required to maintain the plot.
