Grazing the Long Acre

My outstanding memory of Jeremiah Breen is one where he and his neighbour from across the road, the late Mike McGlynn were in charge of a cow each as they grazed the long acre on Tralee Road one fine summer’s evening in the early 1960s.

They had a rope each attached to the animals and they were left mainly to their own devices. The two lads were playing a game with a small rubber ball that looked like a cross between handball and tennis with the ball having to hit the ground after service or on being returned.

I saw them later that evening laying flat out on the warmth of the road and having to get up and out of the way of traffic only a couple of times in the course of their long acre grazing duties. May God be good to both of them now.
