A group of students from Murcia in Spain visited Muire Gan Smál Primary School in Castleisland as part of the Erasmus programme recently.

The programme is facilitated by Léargas, which manages international exchanges in education and helps to connect students in different countries and its aim is to broaden their outlooks towards other cultures.

The visitors from Spain had a wonderful time in Castleisland. The pupils of Muire gan Smál gave them a very warm Irish welcome by performing songs and dances in the school hall and even taught their new Spanish friends The Siege of Ennis and Shoe The Donkey.

Loom Band Designing

They also learned how to design loom bands with local fifth and sixth class students as part of the Junior Entrepreneur Programme in the school.

They visited a number of the classrooms and then joined the third and fourth class pupils in a game of basketball where they got to show off all their skills on the court.

Community College Performance

Finally, the Transition Year students from Castleisland Community College put on a memorable performance of their 80’s musical in the Ivy Leaf Art Centre and it received glowing reviews from the visitors.

“We are really looking forward to continuing our relationship with our colleagues in Murcia. Our school is planning a visit in October where we hope to learn more about Spanish culture and school life. It should be a fantastic experience for the pupils of Muire gan Smál,” said school coordinator and teacher, Donal Gorman.
