Independent candidate in the Castleisland electoral area, Michelle Keane sent a message declaring that the candidates’ debate, which she proposed and planned to host, at the River Island Hotel on this Thursday night at 8pm has now been cancelled.

This is the second such proposal for an all candidate, open debate to bite the dust as an earlier plan put forward by Castleisland Chamber Alliance met a similar fate.

As the race for the four available council seats in the area begins to heat up considerably, the outspoken Ms. Keane said that she sent a detailed letter of invitation to each one of her seven fellow candidates.

Platform to Outline Achievements

She was looking forward to a healthy debate under the baton of an independent moderator.

She also hoped that the event would give the people of the electoral area the opportunity to ask questions of the candidates and to provide the four sitting councillors with a platform to outline their achievements in the area over the past five years. But she got no replies.

She inserted the caveat that if any one of her ‘competitors’ couldn’t attend or failed to show up on the night or turned down her offer she would call the whole thing off – and so it has come to pass.
