Castleisland Desmonds GAA Club’s revamped Garda Eugene Leonard Memorial Family Fun Day was held on Sunday morning at headquarters in Moanmore and under glorious sunshine.
Every pole on Limerick Road was adorned with the blue and white of the host club and the green and gold of the county in honour of the event and of the man who founded it in the course of being stationed here from 1986 up to his untimely death while playing for the club in August 2001.
A Break from Tradition
“This year, in a break from tradition, there was no football but all fun and games, the football will take place later in the year in part two of the family fun day,” said club member Pat Hartnett.
“The Gardai were present with two vehicles and the fire brigade lead by Denny Greaney and the team of firefighters gave several demonstrations of various forms of firefighting which fascinated the majority of young people who witnessed it.
“Hundreds of fun events took place all morning finishing with the pasting of club chairman Kevin Lynch with water balloons.
Coaches Water Bombed
“To complete the fun all the coaches were water bombed to the delight of the young players present. “The Mothers and others team fresh from their success in Mallow on Saturday were also in attendance.
“Thanks to the many people who helped make the annual Garda Eugene Leonard fun day a massive success. A special mention to Ivan Stuart – the man who came up with all the good ideas.
“Thanks to all our club people who helped the Gardai and Fire Brigade – take a bow lads and ladies,” said Pat.
