Local man Patrick McCarthy is back on the fund-raising trail after a successful campaign including a 5K walk around the Black Road from Castleisland Rugby Club last February.
In October 2023 Patrick’s aunt Ellen was diagnosed with stage three breast cancer and he raised €3,000 for the Mid Western Cancer Centre at University Hospital Limerick where she was being treated.
Now Patrick has taken on the challenge of walking an adapted 100 kilometres in 10 days for the Irish Cancer Society Research.
The Irish Cancer Society receives just five percent of its total annual funding from the state.
This means that the society has to raise over €20 million each year to run the services and programmes providing free cancer information, care and support.
Community Walk on July 7th
Patrick McCarthy is taking on the walk in the belief that he and people like him can help researchers move closer every day to providing a cancer care that will give hope to people as they go through treatment.
“On the tenth day of the walk on Sunday, July 7th we want everyone to join me and my family,” said Patrick.
“We leave the Castleisland Rugby Club at 1pm sharp and make our way as a community down the town of Castleisland out the Tralee Road around the bypass to the Killarney Road, up the town and back to rugby club for tea, coffee, buns and water … everyone welcome,” said Patrick in his open invitation.
