Kerry College, Clash Campus, this week proudly celebrated the accomplishments of Transition Year (TY) students who successfully completed modules in a wide range of subjects.

The modules were completed by TY students from across the county and are industry recognised Level 4 minor certifications.

The courses were completed through partnerships with awarding bodies ITEC and Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) during the 2023/2024 academic year.

The achievements of the 250 students were celebrated during an awards ceremony held in each of their schools on Tuesday.

Success of TY Programmes

The awards highlighted the success of Kerry College’s TY programmes, which aim to provide students at this stage of their post-primary school education with practical skills and qualifications alongside traditional academic learning.

The students were recognised for their achievements in fields such as health related fitness, career planning and beauty, all of which are designed to equip them with valuable skills for both personal development and future career paths.

Transition to Further and Higher Education

Ann O’Dwyer, Director Schools Youth and Music said that a central priority of the National Further Education and Training Strategy 2020-2024 and Department of Education Strategy 2023-25 is to explicitly support the transitions of young people to further education and training as well as higher education.

“Kerry ETB prioritised this action and has integrated FET options into the TY Programme in our schools.

“This initiative enables our students to complete FET Modules, to experience QQI Accreditation and supports their life journey and career decisions in a very meaningful way,” said Ms. O’Dwyer.

Hard Work and Dedication Recognised

Coordinator of Transition Year and Further Education and Training at Kerry College, Clash Campus, Celia O’Shea said that it’s wonderful to see the hard work and dedication of our students recognised.

“The hands-on experience and practical learning they have gained through our partnership with ITEC and QQI has really set them up for success and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them,” she said.

Exploring Different Career Paths

Principal of Kerry College, Clash Campus, Stephen Goulding said that the TY programmes give students a head start in exploring different career paths and building essential skills.

“We’re delighted to celebrate their achievements and look forward to continuing to expand these opportunities for future students,” said Mr. Goulding.

Growing Collaboration Reflected

The award ceremony also reflected the growing collaboration between Kerry College and local schools, including: Coláiste Gleann Lí; Castleisland Community College; Gaelcholáiste Chiarraí; Causeway Comprehensive School and Presentation Secondary School, Listowel.

With the TY programmes continuing to expand in the 2024/2025 school year, Kerry College is committed to working with both ETB and non-ETB schools across the region to offer even more students access to these valuable learning experiences.
