We are indebted to the kind and caring people of Castleisland and the surrounding parishes for their continued support, encouragement and overwhelming generosity during the past twelve months.”

This was just one of the sentiments voiced by Liz Galwey, chairperson of the Castleisland Branch of Kerry Hospice Foundation during its AGM at the River Island Hotel, Castleisland on Monday night.

“Thanks to their ongoing financial support, individuals and families on their cancer journey are given world class personal care and phenomenal support in the Palliative Care Unit at Kerry University Hospital.”

A Year of Success

“It was a year of continued success with over €25,061 raised locally and an additional €16,000 yet to be presented.

We thank the community for its support at the Good Friday Walk, Sunflower Day and the annual Coffee Morning in addition to collections from local schools and private donations.

“A special word of appreciation to all our wonderful volunteers who give of their time for the benefit of others. We are privileged to live in such a caring community,” said Liz.

There was a poignant moment at the start of the meeting with a minute’s silence for the late Mary Healy who passed away in September.

Fond Memories of Mary Healy

Mary was a very active and loyal member of the branch for many years and will be fondly remembered by all who were fortunate to have known and worked beside her.

During the meeting it was decided to rename the branch, Castleisland and District Branch of Kerry Hospice, to incorporate all the surrounding parishes in the greater Castleisland region.

Chairperson of Kerry Hospice, Jack Shanahan, gave an update on the extension to the Palliative Care Unit in Tralee. He informed the meeting that planning permission has been granted for the new five bed extension with work due to commence in 2025 following the tender process and various project management works.
