Stationed in Castleisland
Garda Sergeant, Brendan Sheehan was stationed, with his family, in Castleisland in the late 1960s and through the 1970s and they played a full and active part in community life here.
‘Sergeant Sheehan’ himself sang with the parish choir during his tenure here as well as overseeing the running of the local youth club. His Garda colleagues, during his time here in the late 1960s and the early 1970s included: Jim Lordan, Gerry O’Shea, John Moloney and Mick Fitzgerald.
He will be remembered, even by those with cause to remember him, as a fair and honest custodian of his area of responsibility and as one whose considered sentence included sincerely delivered advice and a second chance – with an well aimed parting shot: “We’ll be keeping an eye on you.”
“That was nearly as bad as a month in jail and he’d salute you everywhere he saw you after that,” – one boyo of my acquaintance said after being called to ‘The Barrack’ for a face-to-face with Sergeant Sheehan – but he took the advice and the chance and changed his ways.
May God by good to both of them now.
