The newly formed Castleisland Community Choir will visit Castleisland Community Museum on Thursday night, December 12th from 8:15 for a performance of hymns and songs from their broad repertoire.

Because of the season that’s in it there will, of course, be a selection of Christmas favourites. This is a free event and tea / coffee will be provided.

The choir was formed in Presentation Castleisland and it began in November of last year with a call out to all those who were linked to the Presentation Schools in Castleisland and to the people of Castleisland and its hinterlands.

It started out with a healthy membership of about twenty and new members are always welcome.

Experienced Performers

New it may be but its members have already sung at events with the Presentation School Choir and collaborated with the Kerry Choral Union and the Kilorglin Men’s Social Choir in the past year.

“Rehearsals are on Thursday nights from 7pm to 8pm in St. John’s Hall and we have a few things planned for the year ahead already,” said choir director Ailish Walsh-O’Connor

“This choir is for anyone over 18, who likes to sing or who has ever thought that they would like to join a choir.

Enjoying Making Music

“You don’t need to be able to read music nor do you need to worry if you can’t make every rehearsal. We hope that this is a choir where people can have fun and just enjoy making music together, with no pressure or demands,” said Ailish.

The choir is currently learning Dreams by the Cranberries but have also learned pieces by the Beatles and Abba, Irish pieces like Mo Ghile Mear and Fix You by Coldplay.

There is something for everyone in their repertoire.

The Benefits of Joining a Choir

“Being part of a choir has many benefits for mental health, well-being and boosting cognitive function.

“It improves your lung function, posture and muscle tension as well as your general alertness and it alleviates stress,” Ailish said.

“It is a great way to meet new people and get involved in your local community.

“So, if you like to sing or have ever thought of joining a choir why not give this choir a go and see if it is for you at 7pm, St. John’s Hall on Thursday nights – a warm welcome awaits you! she said.

However, on this Thursday night you can see and hear the choir at the Castleisland Community Museum, No. 42 Main Street – next door to Tom McCarthy’s Bar from 8:15pm. A musical, seasonal treat awaits you !
