Pupils and teachers at Scoil Íde Curranes National School were the outright winners of the Heritage Hunters Award 2024.

Heritage Hunters is a local heritage competition open to all Kerry primary schools. It is organised by Kerry County Museum in conjunction with Radio Kerry, the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society, Kerry County Council, the Education Centre Tralee and the Heritage Council of Ireland.

Third to Sixth Class Project

Pupils from third class to sixth completed their project on Castleisland Castle and the adjudicating panel was particularly impressed with the standard of their entry.

The citation from the pnel read: “The level of research and work that went into this project is astounding from start to finish.

“The project includes so many interesting facts about the Normans and life and society in Ireland in those times. This will be a great resource for the school for years to come.”

Special Prize-Giving Ceremony

The pupils travelled to the Kerry County Museum earlier this year to receive the prestigious award at a special prize-giving ceremony.

They also worked with Elaine Kinsella of Radio Kerry to produce a programme about Castleisland Castle.

This recording will be broadcast as part of the Kerry Today programme between 9am and 11am on Christmas Eve.
