The newest member of Kerry County Council, Cllr. Tommy Cahill is calling on the incoming Government to initiate a massive afforestation programme in lands not suitable for other agricultural purposes.
“This” Cllr. Cahill said “will reduce our carbon footprint in a genuine way and could provide income for hard pressed small farmers and landowners who agree to participate.”
“This would be a proper green initiative, whereby we can make an enormous impact, if we go about it correctly and at the right scale,” he said.
No Need for Increased Taxes
“There should be no need to increase taxes and we can multiply the amounts of oxygen being produced on our planet. Blaming farm animals for our woes on climate change is a farce, when we all know that one of the main causes is the felling of trees over centuries, without replacement,” he added.
“Afforestation is a simple and possibly the single largest solution to our air quality issues and we should tackle it now before it is too late,” Cllr. Cahill concluded.
Cahill Service Since 1960
Cllr. Cahill is the third generation of his family to serve on Kerry County Council since his grandfather Cllr. Tom Cahill was first elected in 1960.
Cllr. Tommy was co-opted to the council seat after his father was elected by popular vote to the 34th Dáil and became Deputy Michael Cahill after the November 29th 2024 general election.
