Imagine walking miles every day just to fetch water, only to find it dirty and unsafe to drink? For millions of girls in developing countries, this is their daily reality.
They miss out on their education, face dangers on their journeys and risk deadly diseases from contaminated water.
Every hour, 200 children die from illnesses caused by unsafe water.
Globally, 785 million people do not have access to clean water – that is one in ten people in the world whose basic need is not being met.
A Long Difficult Journey for Water
To raise awareness, students from Presentation Secondary School, Castleisland walked along the river-bank, symbolising the long difficult journeys their peers in the developing world make every day.
“The walk is also a reminder that water is a finite precious resource that should not be taken for granted.
“By taking action, we can bring clean water to those in need and ensure a healthier future for all,” said Alannah Kelliher – one of the students involved in the awareness campaign.
