St. Patrick’s Secondary School set out in October to cover the distance between Castleisland and New York City as part of a well-being event for the students, staff and the wider school community of St. Patricks’ Secondary School.
The Walk to New York initiative involved students participating in an accumulated walk or run equivalent to the distance between the town of Castleisland and New York City. With a target of 4,931 kilometers and a deadline of St.Patrick’s Day.
Wednesday, March 12th signalled the end of the challenge for the school and the last kilometer was covered by the students of St. Pat’s at An Riocht on Wednesday afternoon. The school community finished with an amazing distance of 5,031 kilometers.
Importance of Extra-Curricular Activities
“Well-being and extra-curricular activities are important in the school and we try to encourage them as much as possible,” said a spokesman for the event.
“We felt this event was rich in the development of key skills and wellbeing indicators. Being resilient, being active and staying connected to the school community were just a few areas of development we felt we covered well.
“We invited St. Pat’s alumni such as past students and family members to engage in the event which enhanced connections with the community.
GAA Future Leaders Programme
“The event also tied in the TY GAA Future Leaders programme which gave students experience in organising. We were particularly delighted reach over 5,000 kilometers.”
“On the final day of the initiative students involved gathered and an award was presented to the student who travelled the most distance within the participants in the school and second year’s Cathal Quirke recorded a huge distance from October to March.
“Sponsor of the event Chef Gerard Delicatessen was also thanked on the day for their support of the initiative.”
