On Christmas night 2005, on a ‘Late Session’ special, Peter Browne broadcast an in-depth interview he had conducted with Cordal fiddle player, Paddy Jones during the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival earlier that year.
Because Paddy Jones received the O’Keeffe festival Dedication to the Music of Sliabh Luachra Award this year, Peter decided to rebroadcast excerpts from the interview on the Rolling Wave on RTÉ Radio One last night.
“Tying your Shoe Laces and Shaving – At the Same Time” – Paddy Jones
In the course of the interview, Paddy told Peter that learning the fiddle can be like trying to tie your shoe laces and shave yourself at the same time.
He also included material recorded at Aidan Connolly’s CD Be Off launch at Browne’s Bar here in Castleisland during last month’s festival.
There were also snippets from the Sunday night concert aired on the Rolling Wave.

Fin Harper Portrait of Paddy Jones
Finn Harper took on the commission of the portrait of Paddy Jones – on the recommendation of festival committee member, Patsy O’Donoghue.
The artist tackled the job with great enthusiasm and brought out Paddy’s abundance of character and warmth in the process. It was a task he undertook and completed through all the distractions surrounding him in the lobby of the hotel over the festival weekend.
Appreciation from Paddy to Finn
The test of the finished product came back to me a few days after the presentation when Paddy Jones rang to make sure his appreciation for the artist’s efforts were conveyed to him.
