Three years ago Sliabh Luachra Women’s Group went about setting up a bowling club here in Castleisland.
The group has just taken delivery of its new bowling mat courtesy of a grant from the Kerry County Council Community Support Group.
“After being invited to a few bowling clubs, and playing the game, we got to like the sport. We then got the loan of a short mat from the Kenmare club,” said spokesperson Betty McAuliffe.
Lovely Hall at An Ríocht
“We bought some second-hand bowls and went to find a venue. We were very lucky to get the use of the lovely hall from An Ríocht Athletic Club. They have been very good to us regarding the laying out of the mat and storing it away afterwards.
“They offered us the use the kitchen for teas when we have visitors playing league matches, so we can’t thank them enough.
“We always knew we were at a disadvantage with playing on a short mat as all clubs have longer mats. We applied to Kerry County Council Community Support Group for a grant to help us buy the longer one and thankfully they came up with the goods and we just got delivery of the mat.
Great Social Activity
“Bowling is a very popular and skillful sport among active retirement clubs all over Ireland. There is no age limit. People in their 80s and 90s are playing. It’s a great social activity and league matches are very enjoyable.
“We play here at An Ríocht every Wednesday from 2-4pm. New members are welcome. What better way to pass a couple of hours on a wet dark winter’s day. It’s great exercise and great fun,” said Betty.
