Community Games Team Geared Up for Munster Finals

Divanes Castleisland / St. Mary's U-11 Presentation 15/03/2017 — Divanes Castleisland have kitted out and sponsored the St. Mary’s Castleisland U-11 Mixed basketball team which will represent Kerry in the Munster Community Games Championships in the University of Limerick on April 2nd. With the Community Games Golden Jubiliee taking place this year, basketball competitions finals have been brought forward to the May weekend in Dublin.

As a result all local competitions were also played off earlier.

While just recovering from the Christmas Blitz and cup finals, coach Tommy Dom O’Connor called together all the U-11 players in the area before finalising the final ten, five girls and five boys.

Obstacles to Success

Castleisland U-11s took part in the Kerry qualifying competition in early February. There were six teams in Castleisland and six in Duagh.

Castleisland played off against teams from: Dingle; Glenflesk; Firies; St.Brendan’s/Oakpark and Ballymacelligott in the first round.

The St. Mary’s Club, Castleisland representatives overcame all obstacles to success and all ten players got a run in each game.

In the semi-finals they met neighbours, Currow/Currans and this was a great game in which Castleisland took the lead early and capitalised on this in the second half and won on a 13-5 scoreline.

In the final they met Ballymacelligott again.

The Stronger Team

From the start Castleisland were the stronger team and again all ten players got their chance on the court and they won on a margin of 18-2.

Now, Castleisland and Kerry representatives, they go onto the Munster finals on April 2nd in the University of Limerick where they will represent their town and county. We wish them all the best.
