Knocknagoshel 1-7 Scartaglen 0-11
In a keenly contested district derby played at Willie Walsh Park Knocknagoshel, Scartaglen edged out Knocknagoshel by the slimmest of margins to qualify for the semi finals of this year’s novice championship.
Niall Barrett opened the scoring in the second minute with a pointed free after a foul on Michael Walsh.
In the sixth minute Scartaglen had a great chance of a goal but Danny Walsh showed reflexes that belied his age when he got down low to save a palmed effort from Pa Rahilly that was destined for the bottom corner.
Pointed from Play
Sean O’Connell pointed from play for the visitors in the seventh minute and they extended their lead when a David Kerins goal-bound shot was tipped over the bar by Danny Walsh.
Knocknagoshel missed two frees that were to prove costly as Pa Rahilly was unerring at the other end from placed balls scoring two in succession.
Alan Horan raided from his half back position to point for Scartaglen while Michael Walsh replied for the home side.
Niall Barrett was denied by Scartaglen’s goalkeeper who knocked it out for a 45 – which David O’Donoghue pointed.
Daniel Murphy pointed from play after a good move for Scartaglen and followed it up with a free to put Scartaglen four points to the good.
Proving a Threat
Knocknagoshel’s full forward Shane O’Connell who was proving a threat throughout was fouled in the square resulting in a penalty which David O’Donoghue duly converted leaving the home side trailing by a single point at the break.
In the second half both teams were evenly matched with two early points for Scartaglen putting three between the sides.
Substitute, John O’Keeffe replied with an excellently taken point from play for Knocknagoshel.
A minor altercation saw Michael Walsh of Knocknagoshel receive a yellow card while Brendan Rahilly of Scartaglen received red.
Long Distance Free
Michael Horan of Scartaglen put his side three in front before Niall Barrett replied with a long distance free.
Michael Walsh pointed from play and David O’Donoghue converted a 45 to make it all square with only minutes remaining.
A foul on Pa Rahilly resulted in a free for Scartaglen which the same player converted to give his side a narrow win on a score of Knocknagoshel 1-7 Scartaglen 0-11.
St. Kieran on the Championship Trail
Focus now shifts to the upcoming county championship with St Kieran’s facing Austin Stacks on Saturday May 13th in Tralee. Knocknagoshel will be well represented through Padraig Reidy, Michael Brosnan and Michael Walsh.
We wish these players well. We also wish those players from the club who are facing college exams in the next week or two every success.
U-14s Travel to Glenbeigh on Friday
Knock/Brosna/Duagh will be playing away to Glenbeigh/Glencar/Cromane in Glenbeigh this Friday 5th May at 7pm.
U-12s in Brosna on Sunday
The under 12s will play this Sunday 7th May at 6pm against Ballyheigue in Brosna.
Underage Teams to Parade in Castleisland
Knocknagoshel underage teams will take part in the Parade in Castleisland on Sunday 7th May to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Bord na nOg in Kerry.
€6,000 Lotto Jackpot at Roche’s Bar
The next draw will be for a jackpot of €6000 and will be held in Roche’s Bar this Saturday May 6th. Tickets are available from The Family Shop, Leahy’s Post Office,The local bars and usual sellers. Thank you for your continued support.
Great Support for Quiz
Many thanks to all who supported Knocknagoshel GAA Coiste na nÓg fundraising quiz on Friday night last. A great night was had by all present with €580 raised.
