The Tralee based Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) has reported a remarkable twenty per cent increase in post leaving certificate enrolments this academic year.

The college, which operates under the auspices of Kerry ETB, has recently been granted independent status as the first standalone designated college of further education in Kerry.

745 Adult Students

The college is now home to 745 adult students and according to newly appointed Principal, Mary Lucey, the increased enrolments evidence the demand and respect which exists both locally and nationally for the quality programmes offered at the college and the strong industry links which KCFE has forged for graduates with a broad range of employers.

Directly to Employment Option

Students who pursue a course can either progress from KCFE directly to employment or to Level 8 degrees at Universities and Institutes of Technology throughout Ireland.

Several new courses are underway at the college this year including Food Science and Nutrition, Sports Nutrition, Coaching and Sports Development, Reception and Customer Care, Music Technology and many more.

Such is the demand for Level 5 and Level 6 PLC courses in Tralee that the college has had to spread its wings and are now delivering courses in five different locations in the town.

Years of Experience

Mary Lucey brings with her years of experience of building links with employers which will benefit the graduates of KCFE immensely.

The intention is to grow the range of courses even further while placing an emphasis on expanding progression routes to third level institutions.

Advanced Progression

In particular, advanced progression where graduates of Level 6 KCFE programmes may be able to gain access to second year of some IT and University courses.

This year has also seen students enjoying a whole host of college events such as lunchtime concerts, clubs and societies including the establishment of Ladies and Gents Football teams under the management of Jack O’Connor and Kevin Beasley.
