Kerry County Council’s artists in residence have been very busy over the last few months.
Film-maker-in-residence Mieke Vanmechelen has connected with a number of special groups of secondary students, each with their own vision and unique approach.
Change the Future
A short film produced with CBS The Green called ‘Change The Future’ was selected for the first heat of the Fresh Film Festival on March 6th in Limerick.
In Killarney Community College the students worked on a project to make a film dealing with issues affecting teenagers and young adults today.
The students worked hard on scripts and storylines and there will be a screening of the film as part of Cruinniú na nÓg at The School House in Muckross at 2pm on June 23rd.
Castleisland Short Film
Presentation Secondary School Castleisland and Saint Patrick’s Secondary School Castleisland came together to present a short film inspired by the idea of place and identity.
They aimed to highlight the value of culture through dance, music, the Irish language and their interest in sport. Mieke has also worked with Tralee Art Group – the group is working on a collaborative project with staff and visitors of Baile Mhuire Day Care Centre.
Opening Reception
The works created during this time will be exhibited at Baile Mhuire following an opening reception on June 14th.
Writer-in-residence Annemarie Ni Churreáin is continuing her work throughout the county with individuals and groups, providing workshops, mentoring and manuscript consultation to writers at all levels.
Most recently she has worked with writers in Dingle, also at the Sliabh Luachra Writers’ Group in Castleisland and at Killarney Library.
Castleisland Library
In May Annemarie delivered a number of creative writing workshops as part of the Bealtaine Festival 2018 programme at Killorglin Library, Tralee Library and Castleisland Library.
On July 26th she will be hosting one-to-one mentoring sessions at Dingle Library. Each session will last 35 minutes, all levels of experience are welcome. After the mentoring sessions, there will be a reading at Dingle Bookshop later that day at 7:40pm.
Improvised Music-Making
Composer-in-residence Ian Wilson has been visiting schools around Kerry bringing music to primary school students in Caherdaniel NS; Faha NS; Scoil Íosagáin in Ballybunion and Clogher NS.
Ian’s intention with the schools projects is to give students the opportunity for creative experiences in music – this includes improvised music-making and song-writing.
Meet with Musicians
Themes have centred on environmental issues, nature, and the individual localities. Another strand of the residency involves songwriting workshops, meeting with songwriters in the county. Ian is happy to meet with musicians of all levels of experience and can be contacted on composer@kerrycoco.ie
Kerry County Council’s artists in residence are co-funded by The Arts Council.
The Maine Valley Post has, is and always will be a free resource for the people of the locality and its wider diaspora.
When we started in 2013, the intention was to be a weekly, online newsletter. Over time, the site has evolved into a much different beast with multiple updates on a daily basis.
Because of its nature as a digital publication, it brings with it certain expenses: computers and cameras that require updating and maintenance; internet hosting and access; to say nothing of the time and hard work that goes into the site. It all adds up…
Our online community has always been our greatest asset and a vocal supporter of the Maine Valley Post since day one.
