Castleisland Day Care Centre in conjunction with Currow Cycling Club have issued a call here in July for cyclists to take part in their 12th annual fundraising spin.
Since it was founded back in September 2007, the Castleisland Day Care Centre Cycle has always been linked to the All-Ireland hurling final Sunday.
Pope Francis Visit
However, due to the experimental changes in the GAA timetables the hurling link has been severed. Because of the visit to Ireland by Pope Francis, the cycle has been moved back a week and onto the second Sunday of September.
The July call worked as chief organiser, Eamonn Breen reported this week that calls of support have been coming in since.
A Lot of Enquiries
“We are getting a lot of enquiries since and it’s great to see so many cyclists out on training spins this far into the year,” he observed.
Now the event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 9th and the off time is 10am.
The routes are slightly different also this year but the choice between long and short cycles remains.
The routes laid out for this year’s event are, as usual, designed to suit both the beginner and the more experienced cyclists.
Three Route Choices
There are three routes in this year’s fundraiser. Route One is a 10 mile spin where beginners, seasoned cyclists and all do this route.
Route Two continues towards Tralee Road and, at Ballycarthy, returns to Castleisland and this is a 25 mile cycle.
Route Three continues to Tralee and Castlemaine before returning to Castleisland and is a 50 mile tour of beautiful countryside.
Health and Fitness
“With increased awareness of health and fitness this event provides a great incentive for people to get on their bikes and engage with cycling as a way of getting more active and healthy.
Highly Appreciative
The board of management of Castleisland Day Care Centre are highly appreciative of the efforts of both the organising club and the participants and all those behind the scenes.
Volunteers and Stewards
“We greatly appreciate the turn out of support for the cycle each year and all the people who work on making the day such a success. We’re thankful to the ladies who provide refreshments and to all the local volunteers who steward the event and of course to our event organisers and the people who take part in the event for us,” – said a spokesperson at the centre.
Sponsorship Cards Available
Sponsorship cards for the cycle will be available soon from the Castleisland Day Care Centre.
Registration is €20 with a special discount for families and takes place at Castleisland Day Care Centre between 9am and 9.45am on the morning of the cycle on September 9th.
Cycling helmets are compulsory for all cyclists and anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
10am is Off Time
The cycle gets under way from the centre at 10am. All cyclists are entered into a draw with lots of prizes on offer.
Castleisland Day Care Centre
The centre is a charitable organisation which relies heavily on fund-raising events like the annual cycle in order to maintain its level of service.
The centre provides day care services for the elderly of the area along with facilitating HSE Mental Health Day Care services and a Physiotherapy Department.
The elderly sector provides day respite for families and carers with services such as nursing, chiropody, mid-day meals, laundry, hairdressing, educational session all part of the regular day.
