U-14 Girls Division Two: St. Mary’s V St. Anne’s

St. Mary’s hosted St. Anne’s in the U-14 girls division two game in Castleisland on Sunday last in what was a close and exciting game right up to the final whistle.

The home side led 11 points to four at the end of the first quarter, seven of the 11 coming from Chantelle Broderick while Katie Fitzgerald was responsible for both of St. Anne’s baskets.

St. Anne’s Louise Kennedy and Doireann O’Shea put their names on the scoresheet early in the second quarter before St. Mary’s responded through Annie Moriarty.

Kept in Touch

Kayleigh Butler kept the visitors in touch and mid way through the quarter only a point separated the sides as they traded score for score but St. Mary’s pushed ahead again through Aoife Roche and Jessica Riordan.

St. Mary’s led by five going into the third quarter but a determined St. Anne’s made a huge comeback.

Exchange of Scores

They took the lead with four minutes to go in the quarter before Annie McCarthy sunk a basket to reclaim the lead for St. Mary’s.

The exchange of scores continued throughout the remainder of the quarter and St. Anne’s led 22 to 21 at the end of the third.

A Single point Win

The final quarter was as exciting, the sides were level at 27 points apiece with just 2.37 remaining on the clock. St. Mary’s Miriam O’Connell scored to put the home side ahead again.

St. Anne’s pulled back to within a point of the home team through free throws from both Doireann O’Shea and Jennifer McCarthy but it was St. Mary’s who ran out winners on a score line of 31 points to 30 on the final buzzer.
