The Association of Irish Local Government (AILG) held its November meeting at the River Island Hotel in Castleisland today.
The AILG is the body which represents over 960 democratically elected members of local authorities throughout the country.
It’s a networking, policy development and training resource for the elected members of Ireland’s thirty-one county and city councils.
Kerry Representatives Elected
And it is to this association that Kerry County Councillors and members of Castleisland and Corca Dhuibhne Municipal District Council, Cllr. Breandán Fitzgerald, Fianna Fáil and Cllr. Charlie Farrelly, Independent were elected recently.
As a member of the AILG, Cllr. Farrelly nominated Castleisland and the River Island Hotel as the hosts for this month’s meeting which was held there today with over 20 delegates in attendance.
Recently Elected President
Up to 16 members of the various local authorities attended the meeting in Castleisland under the recently elected association president, Councillor Nicholas Crossan.
The Buncrana, Co. Donegal native was elected president at the association’s AGM in Gormanstown, Co. Meath on September 30th last.
It was at this meeting that Cllr. Fitzgerald and Cllr. Farrelly were also elected to the association – an honour both men appreciated as first time elected councillors.
Working with Delegates Nationwide
The AILG works with delegates nationwide to ensure that the contribution of Ireland’s democratically elected councillors is appreciated in government departments and throughout the full range of public agencies.
The association holds an annual general meeting where the delegates elect a president, officer board and a national executive committee.
Dingle in 2022
Delegates are responsible for setting the strategy and policies of the association, which are then implemented and delivered through the officer board and executive committee.
Gatherings like this held throughout the country over the coming months. In May 2022 a plenary meeting of the AILG will be attended by over 90 delegates and will be held in Dingle by virtue of Cllr. Fitzgerald’s membership.
