Knocknagoshel National School Stands Out with Grants for Innovative Projects

All involved with Scoil Mhuire, Knocknagoshel National School are excited to announce that it has been selected as one of only 24 schools nationwide and the only one in Kerry, to participate in the Physical Activity in Learning pilot programme.

This recognition comes with a €10,000 grant for project, ‘STEMOlympics: Racing Towards Data Discovery.’

Physical Activity and Science

This cross-curricular initiative integrates physical activity with Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM) education to make learning active and engaging.

The project includes: Physical Activity in which students will engage in various sports, using advanced tools to track performance and illustrate concepts like force and motion.

STEM Education: Utilising wearable technology and data analysis to teach students about collecting and interpreting data.

In Action and Reflection: students will maintain digital diaries, participate in discussions, and present findings, fostering a growth mindset under three levels:

Level one is for ages five to seven and involves basic activities and simple data collection.

Level two for ages eight to 10 and introduces structured activities with wearables for performance tracking.

Level three includes ages 11 to 12 and involves more complex challenges with advanced measurement tools and data analysis.

Creative Schools Initiative

The school has received a €4,000 grant from the Creative Schools Initiative for our project, ‘Ceol Connections.’

This project will enhance musical learning and collaboration among students, fostering a deeper appreciation for music with the support of a Creative Associate.

Eco-Explorers Outdoor Classroom

The school has also been allocated €5,000 from the Glanaruddery Wind Farm Community Fund for its Eco-Explorers Outdoor Classroom and Play-Area project.

This funding will transform the schoolyard into a dynamic, environmentally friendly outdoor classroom, focusing on sustainability, biodiversity, and sensory experiences.

Project Highlights are as follows: Outdoor Classroom which will create an engaging space for natural exploration and learning; A Sensory Area featuring diverse plants and a wet play area to enhance motor skills and an understanding of natural water cycles; Sustainable Materials using eco-friendly and recycled materials for play equipment; Wildlife Awareness involves educational signage and activities to teach about local wildlife and ecological balance and Sensory Regulation will including various textures, sounds, and visual stimuli for a safe and inviting play area.

NCSE UDL Pilot Programme

The school team shares the delight at being selected as one of 45 schools to participate in the National Council for Special Education (NCSE) Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Pilot Programme.

The two-year programme will provide professional development for the school’s educators, helping them apply UDL principles to create more inclusive learning environments.
