The Castleisland District Heritage group is celebrating 10 years and its members have organised a day of talks and walks and film screenings for Saturday, August 17th to mark National Heritage Week.

The day will start at 10:30am at St Brigid’s Hall, Castleisland behind the church, with a welcome and introduction by Sisters Margaret and Maureen of the Presentation Convent, Castleisland.

This will be followed by a tribute to Michael O’Donohoe on whose research the project is founded.

Castleisland Digitisation Project

An overview of the Castleisland Digitisation Project follows which initially includes the correlation and documentation of the school roll books of the Presentation School dating back to the 1870s.

With eyes on the recommended pardons of Poff and Barrett, John Houlihan of the National Graves Association will hold a talk at 11:45am on the Poff and Barrett Memorial in Dromultan with film footage from 1998.

A walk celebrating Con Houlihan will take place at 2pm after refreshments and a screening of Murder Mystery and My Family.

Castle of the Island Talk

Robert Maguire will bring the event to a close with a talk in St Bridid’s Hall on the Castle of the Island and provide an update to his ongoing work on the subject.

There will be an opportunity to see the work done by the society and Martine will be onsite for a few hours to give tips to all budding genealogists on resources available to research your own family tree.

To learn more about the heritage of the area an installation will be available in Castleisland Library from August 20th to 24th.

We are all going for a great day celebrating local history and heritage and everyone is welcome. Fáilte roimh cách.
