Knocknagoshel won’t look anything like the image here tomorrow, Friday August 16th and it didn’t for most of the week either as the annual Pattern festivities took hold.
Tomorrow is another day – to paraphrase the title of the 1970 published book from troubled times by local teacher and war of independence and civil ar activist Séamus O’Connor.
Tomorrow is, indeed, another day in the 12 year old revival of the horse fair in Knocknagoshel.
When the event was re-instated in the village in 2012 it was thought that there hadn’t been a fair of any description there for over half a century – or more – depending on those whose opinions you heard or sought.
Village Making History
In fact, it was said that the village was making its own bit of history by holding its first ever horse fair. Horses had been sold in the village before but always as part of the village’s usual cattle fair.
It may be a harbinger of the day to come but such was the enthusiasm of one Co. Galway couple that they arrived down from Ballinasloe today to attend the fair – but a day too early.
Unfortunately for them they had to return home today due to business which wouldn’t wait.
They’re regular attendees at the November 1st fair in Castleisland and they’re looking for an AirB&B in or close to the town for a couple of nights.
The horse fair in Knocknagoshel will get under way in the village in the morning bright and early.
